What are Damien Foundation’s main activities?

In order to eliminate tuberculosis, leprosy and leishmaniasis, we are active in the following fields:

Medical aid

Our teams in the field provide a diagnosis and good quality treatment. Doctors and nurses accompany the patient throughout the treatment to prevent a relapse or resistance to medicines.

Active screening

We engage in active search for people affected by disease. This enables them to begin treatment at an early stage while keeping the number of new cases to a minimum.

Informing and increasing awareness

One of the first steps recovery is to recognise the symptoms. This applies to both patients and nursing staff. For these reasons, but also to fight against stigma related to these diseases, Damien Foundation is committed to increasing awareness and informing.

Training

We train medical staff to recognise and treat these diseases. We also train volunteers to increase early diagnosis knowledge. We ensure that their knowledge and skills remain up-to-date.

Research

We need good tools and techniques for quality screening and treatment. This is why Damien Foundation attaches great importance to operational and applied research.

Logistic support

Where needed, we provide the countries with whom we work with logistical, technical and financial assistance. The precise nature of our assistance depends on the country. We sometimes provide this support in countries where we are not or no longer active.

Care after cure

Our work doesn’t end with curing patients. In this way we want to ensure that they can find their place in society once again. We may provide them with the training & budget they need to set up their own business. We also provide extra medical care to tackle the consequences of the diseases.
